Our story, values and community are at the heart of The Salt Pig, working with nature

It’s about celebrating where it comes from, supporting the people who produce it, and bringing our community together around the table.

Back in October 2007, that idea became reality. Inspired daily by the landscape, farmers and fishermen of Purbeck, we saw first-hand the quality being reared, grown and landed on our doorstep. Yet much of it was leaving the area, and local people weren’t always able to buy it easily. We wanted to change that — and to build something rooted in farming, food and the stories behind both.

How we began

The Salt Pig was inspired not only by the landscape, but also by the people, the farmers and fishermen.

Our first premises in Wareham was owned by the Rempstone Estate and they were instrumental in supporting our vision. We rolled up our sleeves and refurbished it ourselves, with late nights and plenty of determination.

The vision was simple, the provenance and buzz of a great farmers’ market, but open seven days a week.

Our success led to the second Salt Pig (Salt Pig Too) opening in Swanage, a larger space built around the same core principles of traditional butchery and fishmongery alongside a café and restaurant.

Provenance at the Core

We are proud to work with an increasing number of local farmers, fishermen and producers, operating with conservation and nature in mind. From field to fork, sea to counter, provenance isn’t a marketing term for us it’s a responsibility.

As demand has grown across Purbeck and beyond, we’ve been asked to provide authentic, sustainable food and drink for shops, cafés, events and catering.

It’s a trust we never take lightly.

One person’s vision has become a true family affair

The journey began with James working as a shepherd at Steepleleaze farm, near Kimmeridge and this family connection has continued with his son Jacob now following in his footsteps.

Fred has joined the Salt Pig team, while Evie and Quinn are always ready to help feed the animals or jump on the tractor whenever they can.

While James’s wife Becky has joined the business and has a leading role in the day-to-day running of the Salt Pig family.

We are incredibly lucky to live in beautiful Purbeck, surrounded by inspiring countryside and the community within it, which continues to shape everything we do.
